The Video Transcoding Challenge

Many OTT providers and broadcasters struggle to provide their customers with excellent video quality on all platforms and devices – from high resolution TVs and computer screens to tablets and mobile phones. The problem is that the media content has to be adapted to a large number of formats.

The Inca IP Video Platform allows for intelligent video streaming and linear as well as multi-bitrate video transcoding. It provides an easy way for network operators to optimise their transport streams and manage bandwidth efficiently. Inca is a vital support to all operators that wish to extend their offers towards multi-screen applications and services. The Inca transcoder makes it possible to adapt the format, resolution and bitrate of large numbers of live satellite, IP and off-air digital sources for delivery to set top boxes or multi-screen end devices.

Become Independent

Smaller cable companies, regional broadcasters or OTT operators often have to rely on third-party transport services. Such a scenario frequently goes along with high costs, low service quality and the always lingering threat of the provider suddenly discontinuing delivery operations. After years of such dependence and the sudden loss of their third-party service provider, West Alabama TV Cable (WATVC), a cable company serving West Alabama, decided to handle all their content reception and video transcoding in-house.

Set up your own Video Transcoding Process

In the very short transition period of just a few weeks, WATVC switched to Inca’s IP Video Platform. Thanks to this flexible solution they are now able to process and monitor satellite and off-air channels and transcode them to WATVC’s current digital MPEG-4 platform. In this way they can always provide superior video quality to their customers. The Inca platform interacts ideally with WATVC’s other headend and field gear. Embedded cable modems in all set top boxes provide both QAM video and full two-way IP services to the home. Their IPTV middleware enables the operator to offer services such as advanced program guide, navigation and interactive features that are usually available only on IPTV networks.
